Roblox parental controls: how to set them up
Roblox is one of the most popular apps with kids, and it has solid parental controls once you know where they are. Here is the full 2026 setup, plus the device-level layer most parents miss.
The setup, in 5 steps
- Set a Parental Controls PIN. The one step that locks everything else.
- Turn on Account Restrictions. Curated games, no free chat.
- Choose a content maturity level. Match it to their age.
- Lock down chat. Limit who can message your child.
- Cap Robux spending and screen time. Set limits and a schedule.
Roblox has two layers of safety: the controls inside Roblox itself, and the controls on the phone it runs on. Most parents set up neither, a few set up the first, and almost none add the second. This guide covers both, starting with Roblox. First, check the birth date on the account is correct, since Roblox uses it to decide which experiences and features are available.
1. Set a Parental Controls PIN
This is the single setting that separates parents who have actually configured Roblox safety from parents who think they have. Once a PIN is set, any change to the Privacy, Security or Parental Controls settings requires entering it. Without it, your child controls the settings, not you. Set this first, before anything else.
2. Turn on Account Restrictions
Account Restrictions is Roblox's strictest safety mode. With it on, the account can only play experiences Roblox has verified as age-appropriate, and free-form chat is replaced by a pre-approved menu of messages. For younger children this is the safest setting. For older, more trusted kids you may prefer the finer-grained controls below instead.
3. Choose a content maturity level
Content maturity lets you decide how mature the experiences your child can open are allowed to be. Set it deliberately rather than leaving it at the default, and revisit it as your child gets older. This is the dial that does most of the day-to-day filtering once Account Restrictions is off.
4. Lock down chat
Chat is where most of the real risk lives. Under Experience chat, choose who your child can text with publicly, and under Direct chat, choose who can message them in experiences. For young children, "No one" is the safe default. For older kids, keep it to known friends. Talk through why, so it feels like a shared rule rather than a punishment.
5. Cap Robux spending and screen time
Two more limits finish the job. Under Spending restrictions, set a monthly Robux cap and switch on notifications so surprise charges cannot pile up. Under time limits, set a daily allowance and a schedule that locks Roblox during bedtime, school hours and meals. These protect your wallet and your child's sleep in one go.
Add the layer Roblox cannot: the rest of the phone
Roblox's controls only govern Roblox. They do nothing about adult sites in the browser, other apps, or a child simply reinstalling something you removed. That is the device-level layer, and it is where a dedicated blocker comes in. Appcognito blocks over 750,000 adult sites on-device across every app and browser, lets you block other apps and keywords, and locks it all behind your own code with reboot-proof uninstall protection. It does this without tracking location or reading messages, so you cover the gaps Roblox leaves without spying on your child.
Set Roblox's controls, add a device-level blocker, and keep talking. No single layer is enough on its own.
A quick safety note
Settings change over time, so check the current steps in Roblox's official parental controls help. No control catches everything, so pair these with an open conversation and make it safe for your child to tell you if something online upsets them. Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on parental controls on Roblox?
Log into your child's Roblox account, open Settings, set a Parental Controls PIN under Security, then turn on Account Restrictions under Privacy. The PIN is the key step: once it is set, none of the safety settings can be changed without it.
Can my child turn off Roblox parental controls?
Only if they know the Parental Controls PIN. Once a PIN is set, any change to Privacy, Security or Parental Controls requires it. Choose a 4-digit PIN your child cannot guess, not a birthday and not 1234.
How do I limit how much my child spends on Robux?
In Parental Controls, open Spending restrictions and set a monthly spending limit. You can also turn on spending notifications so you are alerted as purchases add up.
How do I set screen-time limits on Roblox?
In Settings, then Parental Controls, set daily time limits and schedule periods when Roblox is locked, such as bedtime, school hours or mealtimes.
Is Roblox safe for kids?
Roblox can be reasonably safe once you set a Parental PIN, turn on Account Restrictions, set content maturity and lock down chat. Pair that with device-level blocking for adult content elsewhere on the phone, and an open conversation, since no setting catches everything.
Cover what Roblox cannot
Appcognito blocks adult content and the apps you choose across the whole phone, locked behind your code. No location tracking, no reading messages. Free to start.
