Roblox parental controls: how to set them up

Roblox has two layers of safety: the controls inside Roblox itself, and the controls on the phone it runs on. Most parents set up neither, a few set up the first, and almost none add the second. This guide covers both, starting with Roblox. First, check the birth date on the account is correct, since Roblox uses it to decide which experiences and features are available.

1. Set a Parental Controls PIN

This is the single setting that separates parents who have actually configured Roblox safety from parents who think they have. Once a PIN is set, any change to the Privacy, Security or Parental Controls settings requires entering it. Without it, your child controls the settings, not you. Set this first, before anything else.

2. Turn on Account Restrictions

Account Restrictions is Roblox's strictest safety mode. With it on, the account can only play experiences Roblox has verified as age-appropriate, and free-form chat is replaced by a pre-approved menu of messages. For younger children this is the safest setting. For older, more trusted kids you may prefer the finer-grained controls below instead.

3. Choose a content maturity level

Content maturity lets you decide how mature the experiences your child can open are allowed to be. Set it deliberately rather than leaving it at the default, and revisit it as your child gets older. This is the dial that does most of the day-to-day filtering once Account Restrictions is off.

4. Lock down chat

Chat is where most of the real risk lives. Under Experience chat, choose who your child can text with publicly, and under Direct chat, choose who can message them in experiences. For young children, "No one" is the safe default. For older kids, keep it to known friends. Talk through why, so it feels like a shared rule rather than a punishment.

5. Cap Robux spending and screen time

Two more limits finish the job. Under Spending restrictions, set a monthly Robux cap and switch on notifications so surprise charges cannot pile up. Under time limits, set a daily allowance and a schedule that locks Roblox during bedtime, school hours and meals. These protect your wallet and your child's sleep in one go.

Roblox's controls only govern Roblox. They do nothing about adult sites in the browser, other apps, or a child simply reinstalling something you removed. That is the device-level layer, and it is where a dedicated blocker comes in.
